Cambodia’s New Techo International Airport Set to Open on September 9

Cambodia is preparing to welcome a new gateway to the world. On September 9, the long-awaited Techo International Airport in Kandal Province will officially begin operations, marking a new chapter in the nation’s aviation history.

Located just 20 km from Phnom Penh, the $1.5 billion project was built on a massive 2,600-hectare site spanning Kandal and Takeo provinces. The airport was funded by Cambodia Airport Investment Co. and constructed by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau (CCTEB).

A Modern Hub for Cambodia

Techo International Airport is classified as a 4F airport—the highest global standard—making it capable of handling the world’s largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380-800 and Boeing 747-800.

Construction began in June 2020 and has now reached 100% completion. The airport will initially serve 13 million passengers annually, with plans to expand to 30 million after 2030, and up to 50 million by 2050.

Although operations will start on September 9, the grand inauguration ceremony is scheduled for October 20, led by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

A Symbol of Peace and Development

Prime Minister Hun Manet previously described the new airport as “a symbol of peace and development in Cambodia.” During his inspection visit last year, he emphasized that this project would become the country’s largest airport and a cornerstone of its growth.

Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), confirmed that the airport is ready to serve international flights, boosting Cambodia’s connectivity with the world.

Driving Growth Beyond Tourism

Industry experts believe the new airport will transform Cambodia’s position in the region.
Thourn Sinan, head of the Cambodia office of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), said the modern facility would strengthen Cambodia’s image as a world-class destination and attract more airlines and travelers.

“The improved connectivity will stimulate economic growth by creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and driving investment in infrastructure,” Sinan explained. “Beyond tourism, it will also enhance trade and business opportunities.”

Looking Ahead

With its modern design, massive capacity, and strategic location, Techo International Airport is set to play a vital role in Cambodia’s economic future. More than just an aviation hub, it represents the country’s ambition to integrate deeper into regional and global markets.

As the first passengers pass through its gates this September, Cambodia will be taking off into a new era of growth and opportunity.
