🚣‍♂️ 139 Days, 14,400 km, and Way Too Many Blisters: The Maclean Brothers’ Epic Pacific Row

Forget cruise ships and business class flights. The Maclean brothers—Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan—decided the best way to cross the Pacific Ocean was to row. And not just for a few hours at the gym—try 139 days, nonstop, without support, across 14,400 km of open ocean.

Spoiler alert: they actually made it. And yes, they set a world record while doing it.

🌊 The Journey of Madness Greatness

  • Start: Peru, mid-April.

  • Finish: Cairns, Australia, August 30.

  • Distance: 14,400 km (that’s basically rowing from Edinburgh to the Moon… okay, not really, but it felt like it).

  • Record: Fastest unsupported Pacific crossing, and first-ever team to row the Pacific from South America.

Their boat, the Rose Emily, was light, fast, and named after their late sister. A touching tribute—with a side of “please don’t sink.”

🍣 What Do You Eat at Sea for 4.5 Months?

Mostly fish they caught themselves, plus freeze-dried meals. Think of it as a four-month camping trip, but without solid ground, with constant seasickness, and the occasional “oops, a wave just threw me out of the boat.” (Yes, Lachlan actually got tossed overboard one night. Big brother Ewan had to fish him back in.)

⛈️ Storms, Setbacks, and Sydney Dreams

Originally, the plan was to finish in Sydney. But after multiple storms literally pushed them backward, they switched to Cairns instead. Honestly, after 139 days at sea, anywhere with dry land and Wi-Fi is a victory.

Jamie summed it up best:

“The last two weeks were brutal. We kept getting blown back by storms—it felt like hope was vanishing.”

Still, they rowed through it, proving once again that Scots are powered by stubbornness and possibly porridge.

💧 More Than Just Records

The brothers weren’t only chasing glory. They aimed to raise $1.35 million for clean water projects in Madagascar. So far, they’ve raised over $1.15 million, helping bring clean water to 40,000 people.

That’s the kind of impact that makes sore arms and permanent sea legs totally worth it.

🏆 Final Thoughts

While most of us complain when the Wi-Fi drops for 5 minutes, these guys rowed the Pacific Ocean for 139 days straight. With this record, plus their earlier Atlantic crossing in 2020, the Maclean brothers are basically turning “extreme rowing” into a family hobby.

One thing’s for sure: if they ever ask you to “go for a quick row,” politely decline.
