Can Fish Actually Drown?
It sounds like a joke.
How can a fish… drown in water?
But surprisingly, the answer is yes. Fish can actually suffocate in the very thing they live in.
Fish don’t breathe water the way humans breathe air. Instead, they use their gills to extract oxygen that is dissolved in water.
And here’s the problem: water doesn’t contain that much oxygen.
If the oxygen level drops too low, fish can literally suffocate.
This can happen in crowded ponds, polluted lakes, or during hot weather when warm water holds less oxygen.
But what’s really interesting is that humans figured this out a long time ago… and even turned it into a fishing technique.
In many rural areas across Southeast Asia, fishermen used a traditional method to catch fish in ponds, sometimes called “covering the pond.”
They would spread large fishing nets across almost the entire surface of the water.
Not to trap the fish directly…
but to slowly change the environment.
When the surface is covered, water circulation decreases and oxygen levels begin to drop.
Fish inside the pond start to feel the stress.
They swim faster, searching for areas where fresh oxygen might still exist.
But the fishermen leave one small opening in the net.
To the fish, that opening feels like the only escape.
Soon, dozens of fish start rushing toward that gap.
And right there… the fishermen place another net or trap.
The fish swim straight into it.
Even tough species like the Snakehead, famous for surviving in muddy ponds and even breathing air from the surface, can become exhausted if trapped underwater for too long.
Without enough oxygen, they weaken quickly.
So in a strange way, fish can actually “drown.”
Not because there is too much water…
but because there isn’t enough oxygen inside it.
Nature is full of strange paradoxes.
A fish might survive on land for a short time…
but under the wrong conditions, it can still suffocate in the very water it calls home.
And long before modern science explained it, fishermen already understood this simple truth—just by watching how fish behave in a pond.
