🏃‍♀️ Wu Yanni Breaks China’s 10-Year Hurdles Drought

For the first time in a decade, China will be represented in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships. And the athlete leading the charge? None other than the country’s track & field star — Wu Yanni.

🎟️ A Ticket to Tokyo 2025

On August 26, World Athletics confirmed the top 40 athletes qualified for the event. Wu Yanni squeezed in at 40th place with 1,248 points, grabbing the very last spot.

  • She hasn’t yet beaten the automatic qualifying standard of 12.73 seconds, but her consistent performances across recent competitions helped her rack up enough ranking points.

  • This ends China’s 10-year absence in the event since Wu Shuijiao last competed at the 2015 World Championships.

👑 Dominating at Home

Wu Yanni isn’t just a last-minute qualifier. She’s been the six-time national champion (2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025).

  • Her personal best? 12.74 seconds (Shandong, June 2024) — also the fastest Asian time of the year.

  • At just 26, she’s already made it to the Paris 2024 Olympics, though she admits she fell short there: “I’d give myself 0 points,” she joked about her Olympic debut.

💎 The “Tattooed Goddess” of Chinese Athletics

Born in Zigong, Sichuan (1997), Wu is known not only for her speed but also for her bold personality and tattoos — which she says symbolize her confidence. With her charm and striking look, she’s built a big social media following and earned the nickname: “China’s track & field goddess.”

🏆 World Championships 2025 — What’s Next?

The stage is set in Tokyo (Sept 13–21, 2025):

  • Heats: Sept 14, 11:28 AM

  • Semis: Sept 15, 9:05 PM

  • Final: Sept 15, 10:20 PM

With 49 events in total, the championship will serve as a crucial rehearsal before the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

👉 Whether she’s sprinting over hurdles or trending online, Wu Yanni is proof that athletics can be as much about personality as performance. All eyes will be on her in Tokyo.
