iPhone Air’s Battery Is a Game-Changer

The new iPhone Air may grab attention with its ultra-slim design, but the real breakthrough is hidden inside: its metal-can battery.

Unlike the pouch-style batteries used in most consumer devices, Apple’s new battery is wrapped in a durable metal shell. This allows for flexible, two-dimensional shapes that fit neatly around the iPhone’s internal components—squeezing energy into every bit of available space.

Gene Berdichevsky, co-founder and CEO of battery materials company Sila (and a former Tesla engineer), called it “revolutionary.” After seeing the cells up close, he explained:

“Now you can build batteries in virtually any two-dimensional shape. That’s incredible.”

Why it matters

  • More durable: The metal shell is tougher than soft plastic pouches, reducing swelling issues.

  • Smarter use of space: Batteries can extend right to the edges, maximizing capacity.

  • Future-ready: This design paves the way for advanced silicon anodes, which could store up to 50% more energy than today’s graphite ones.

Berdichevsky also noted that such batteries are “very important” for compact devices like AR and VR headsets, where every millimeter counts.

The bigger picture

While metal-can batteries are more expensive to produce, they could soon replace the pouch cells we’re used to. And with companies like Sila pushing silicon-anode technology forward, Apple’s latest innovation might be the first step toward a new era of battery performance—not just for phones, but for all consumer electronics.
