Mass Fish Deaths and Broken Coral Found in Nha Phu Bay – Cause Still Unclear

A recent environmental incident in Nha Phu Bay, Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam has raised concerns among scientists and conservationists. Tourists diving in the bay reported dead fish scattered across the seabed and broken coral reefs, sparking public debate over the health of one of the region’s most valuable marine ecosystems.

What Happened in Nha Phu Bay?

The discovery was first made by a group of German tourists during a diving trip organized by Vietnam Underneath Nha Trang. They filmed the disturbing sight of floating dead fish and collapsed coral structures, later sharing the footage on social media.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Khanh Hoa released an initial report suggesting that fish may have died due to local purse seine fishing activities. When nets are pulled in, some fish escape but later die due to stress or injury. However, the report did not explain why coral reefs were found broken.

Authorities Investigating Coral Damage

According to Le Đinh Khiem, head of the provincial Fisheries, Seas and Islands Sub-Department, further investigation is required to determine the cause of coral breakage. He acknowledged that multiple factors could be involved—ranging from destructive fishing practices to natural stresses such as storms, or even irresponsible tourism activities.

Meanwhile, the Border Guard Command of Khanh Hoa has suggested that officials should also meet with the tourists who filmed the incident, to gather more evidence and verify details of what happened underwater.

Why It Matters

Nha Phu Bay, near the famous coastal city of Nha Trang, is home to rich marine biodiversity and thriving coral ecosystems that attract both tourists and scientists. Coral reefs not only support fisheries but also act as natural barriers protecting coastlines. Their damage signals broader ecological stress that could threaten livelihoods dependent on marine resources.

Looking Ahead

For now, the official cause of coral breakage in Nha Phu Bay remains uncertain. Local authorities are under pressure to provide a transparent explanation and to take stronger action in safeguarding marine habitats. Without swift measures, both the environment and the region’s tourism reputation could face long-term harm.
